Stimulation of the nasal mucous membranes causes the violent expulsion of air through the nose and mouth. The afferent (incoming) impulse is carried by the 5th cranial nerve (trigeminal). The efferent answer is carried by the 10th nerve (pneumogastric), the Phrenic Nerve, the motor portion of the trigeminal nerve, the 7th cranial nerve (facial), 9th cranial nerve (glossopharyngeal), upper thoracic nerves, and sympathetic pathways.
The eye blink is due to the stimulation of the facial nerve, and is part of the reflex response. The reflex center is located in the brain stem and the upper cervical cord.
