I know that, for no apparent reason, the earth's magnetic field reverses every bazillion years or so. Does this happen instantaneously? If so, does it cause major weather events, floods, earthquakes, or other cataclysms? If it happens gradually, does that mean that occasionally both poles are located somewhere on the equator?
