Daphnia are small crustaceans more commonly known as "water fleas."
They are found in fresh-water lakes and streams and can be easily
raised and maintained in a fresh-water aquarium. Their small size
and translucent body, which allows one to view their internal organs, is
ideal for studying their physiology under a microscope, without hurting
the animal.
In addition to the MadSci Files below, the pages on
Daphnia
at Cornell University's Environmental
Inquiry provide a good introduction to working with these creatures.
